“Do I have two pieces of art, or one crime?”

In Chapter 18, Ms. Hussey’s class attracts attention to the Robie House by demonstrating in front of it.  During their demonstration, the students chop up prints of famous paintings.  Their intention is to show how a work of art cut into pieces cannot possibly be the same as it was when whole.

Below are images of some of the famous paintings mentioned in The Wright 3.  Look at each one.  Then, post a comment explaining which painting you like best and why it's your favorite.  Think about the subject of the painting, the colors of the painting, the mood or the feeling of the painting, and the style of the artist.  Include these in your explanation.  Write in complete sentences, please.

I like van Gogh's picture best because it is a very simple painting.I personaly like simple rather than to specific that you don't even know what the picture is.I think the picture has a relaxing mood. It's a bed for crying out loud! The colors are kind of dull and boring. That doesn't make it a bad picture. It's just that the colors are plain old brown and blue.I think that the style of the artist is colorful and simple.

I agree my favorite is also Van Gogh's bedroom painting. The painting is simple and colorful. The artist didn't really put much into the painting but it turned out to be so colorful and relaxing and just plain homecoming! Just looking at the painting makes you feel right at home just a country bedroom with a nightstand and a little rocking chair, perfect to read a book and relax to take your mind off things. Isaiah is also right because in simple paintings there might be something hidden but you don't even have to specify something that you don't even know. So, that's what I like best about Van Gogh's bedroom painting simply because it's simple.

I like Van Gogh's painting because it reminds me of a colorful bedroom. It has simple lines and many angles. The many angles make the pictures above the bed look like they are falling off the wall. It is a cool and simple room, thats why I like it.

I like Seurats painting because it has children playing and people enjoying their Sunday afternoon. The style of the artist is very colorful and full of activity. He portrays his paintings full of life. The subjects are families spending time together.

I like Seurats painting because it is so soothing, just at the sight of it. You're having just a lovely day in the park, you can run around, maybe fish a little bit. Then you see something dark and evil. The woods, pitch black on a beautiful day like this. No way! Suerats painting has everything. That is why i love this painting.

Baker: I've never paid attention to the darkness of the woods before! "Good eye" and great attention to detail.
Your description of the woods (somewhat) reminds me of a famous poem by Robert Frost, the last stanza of which reads:
The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
In this poem, sleep can be interpreted as eternal sleep/death and the woods as a tomb/the afterlife. I'm just playing with ideas, but if the woods were to symbolize death in Seurat's painting, then all the colorful, communal* activity at the painting's forefront would symbolize life... and remind us (the viewers) to appreciate every moment and treasure every person dear to us.
*communal means shared by everyone in a group or belonging to a group of people

i personally like Van Gogh's art because not all rooms are unique like the one Vincent Van Gogh has in his art, which reminds me of nature with all of the different colors

I liked "The Millinery Shop" by Degas because it is very detailed. I think it has some amazing colors and the hats look so delicate and bright. I love the dark and light colors the hats bring out. The mood looks quite and peaceful as does the woman. One thing I like is the green coloration in the back. Another thing I like is the woman looks as if she is studying her work as if she does not like it. I just love the whole picture and how he paints his art work.

Tinkerbell: I, too, like the green in "The Millinery Shop," but I also like the blues and the rusts in the painting. I'd have a hard time deciding which hat I most wanted to buy! Choices, choices, choices... and each one seems to be illuminated by a spotlight, as does the woman herself.

reposting for Winnie:
I liked Sunday Afternoon On Grande Jette, because it shows a lot of happy people having a good time together. Some of the painting is shadowy, and some sunny. The colors are bright and dull at the same time. I like the way paintings only show part of it. You have to figure it out for yourself.

I like Matisse's painting. I don't really know why I like it.

Gummy Bear: How does the Matisse connect with The Wright 3?

I like Seurat`s painting because it`s a very bright and colorful, seemingly happy day. But I have to agree with baker on the fact it has a dark, mysterious, almost scary side. As if anything could be lurking in the shadows.

I'm a little with puppylover28 but I see some commotion in the scene. There are dogs running around and you can see a monkey by a women in a blue shirt and skirt and that might make a little disaster. But I see some relaxation in there too. There are people sitting and laying under the shade of the trees and some people are even having a picnic. I like it because it is very busy and it shows a lot of surprises. I would probably have a fun time playing there on the grass and in the lake.

I like van gogh's panting the bedroom because its like a quaint little house from the old days it shows how people and children lived back then. The painting shows the mood of sadness and joy at the same time. It's like you feel the panting but you just want to get away but you just can't since you feel sad but you also feel joy for just being alive and being there. If you cut it up it will just look like you have just cut up a chair and then you will not be able to sit in it you'll just fall and will not be able to enjoy it.Its like a jigsaw puzzle you have the jig but you don't have the saw and in van gogh's painting if you cut it in half you can only enjoy a bed, half a window and some paintings and not the rest that is why they should not cut up the Robie house.

The painting I chose was "The Millinery Shop" by Degas.I have chosen this because I myself have a passion for hats. The expression on the lady's face showed me that she put a lot of thought into her creations.Between the warm colors and the relaxing scenery, this painting made me feel very cozy.I love the quaint style Degas used in The Millinery Shop.

I like Van Gogh's painting "The Bedroom".You can see the dark and light shades of color in all areas of the painting. On the footboard of the bed, you can see where each panel beings and ends. The straight back chairs resemble old times. When I look at the painting it makes me feel relaxed. The soft colors make the painting cozy and comfortable.I think the room without a telephone or other eletronic items show the artist is someone who appreciates the simpler things in life. If you walked into an art museum, took a knife and cut a painting in half it would never be the same.

I like Van Gogh painting "The Bedroom" because it's just like an ordinary bedroom that you would see everyday. It has no flashiness. It is very simple, yet it has very bright colors and stands apart. The angle of the painting is also nice. It is as if you are standing right at the doorway of the room.

I like "A Sunday On La Grande Jatte" (correct me if I spell wrong!).There are so many colors but they all fal under the same catogory (being light in pigment). No colors stnds out more than others, they all complement each other.Did you know Seurat painted useing moniscule dots? Look at the paintg closely. This style of painting is called pointilisume.

Heather said...

Wow, odaryld! I'm impressed by your research. Seurat developed pointillism, which, as you said, is the technique of painting with small, individual dots of pure color. The technique works because our minds blend all of those dots into forms that we recognize.

I realy like Mondrians painting because it is awesome how he uses primary colors in his painting and the straight lines he uses because it looks like a challenging puzzle.
