I think graffiti is art and vandalism because people can express themselves through art witch is graffiti. Then I think is vandalism when taggers tag people's property like in The Writing On The Wall, taggers taged the church.

I beilive graffiti can be both. When people do graffiti in private places, I call it art. When people do graffiti on people's property, I call it vandilism. It depends on where you do it.

Nice thinking, whitetailhunter.

I think graffiti is both because it is a cool kind of art and if you do it at somebody's property it is vandalism.

i think it is both too. if you put art on something that is your's it is art but if you put art on something that is not your's it is vandalism but it is still art. personally i like to draw mythical creatures which is art because i draw on something that is mine, but if i go over to my neighbor's house and spray paint the whole side of their house it is vandalism because there house isn't mine

I think graffiti is both also graffiti is both because when u start spray painting on a wall or home that does not belong to you then you are vandalizing because you do not have the consent of the persons wall you are spray painting on.I think that it is also art because when you have the consent of someone to spray paint their home then that would be considered art because when someone asks you to spray paint on their home then its like they are telling you to make a painting.Spray painting is like art you express your emotions like how do you feel if you are feeling mad you would make it red if you are calm you would make it blue.Art and graffiti are the same in many ways and it can also be vandalism if you are not told and are doing it against the law it is vandalism if you are doing it with the consent of someone then it would be considered art.

I think that graffiti is both. I believe it is vandalism when you express your art on someone else's property . At the same time I believe it can be art because it is a way of expressing your feelings, beliefs, and stories.

In my opinion its art because in art you really express yourself and that is the same in graffiti. For example in art if your exited you might do a collage or splatter paint. If you were mad you might do a complicated painting like you could never figure out whats going on in the painting. Its the same in graffiti because most every tagger is expressing there feelings, for example the flower on the wall in the story made you want to cry if you saw it or it made you sad because of the way the tagger expressed their feelings. So it really is art, one thing that annoys me though people write dirty things and thats not art thats expressing yourself in a rude way, when all you have to do is draw a picture or a pattern that expresses yourself in the right way. Another reason i know it is art is because i went to an art show before and they had a tunnel full of graffiti and it was part of the art show to show it is art.

I think graffiti was art and some is art, but some of that art has been abused to an extent
that the law had to get involved and declared it vandalisim.

I agree with LAG because it is art if you are doing it on your property it is legal. If you are doing it on another's property it is against the law or is considered vandalism.

Excellent comments! Later in our novel, one of the characters will say, metaphorically, that graffiti is a weed. Since most of you agree that graffiti is both art and vandalism, apply your shared opinion in an explanation of this metaphor. If graffiti is both art and vandalism, how is it like a weed? Can it be a flower? How?

I like, donatello, that you mentioned how colors convey emotion and express mood. I also like, Natnat, that you explained art as an expression of "feelings, beliefs, and stories." These comments, as well as the many others that relate art to self-expression, made me think that facebook is a form of graffiti. Do you agree with me? Why or why not?

Heather said...

Collectively, your comments prompt me to wonder about the purposes of art. Besides self-expression, for what reasons do artists create? raymaybug, do you think artists sometimes create "rude" images intentionally? Do artists sometimes want to shock or offend viewers, and, if so, why?

I think graffiti is art and vandalism. It can be art because some people do it professionally. Other people will do it on property that is not theirs witch would make it vandalism.

I think graffiti is both. If you do it in certain places it isn't vandalism. But on the other hand if you do graffiti where it is prohibited, you are breaking the law and officials such as the police are going to have to intervene. But if you do graffiti for a living, well, that would be a different story.Art is colors you use to make some kind of picture or thing and thats what most taggers mean for graffiti to be.If I did graffiti I wouldn't mean to break the law, I would just be doing what I like to do,art.

Graffiti is a way of being famous. like the guy who did graffiti on a subway cart,he was'nt trying to do anything wrong.

Graffiti is art and vandalism because first of all if someone says that you can do graffiti on their property,it is not vandalism but if they don't say that you can or anybody else then it will be vandalism.

Anonymous said...

I think graffiti is both because if someone asks you to do it then it is not vandalism it is art. When you are walking down the sreet and you see graffiti on a church or on a building than it would be vandalism because it is on someone elses property.Graffiti is a way someone express themselves and shows how they are feeling not only that but it is consederd art.Thats why I think graffiti is both art and vandalism.

I think when it is on paper or where it is okay to be, it is art. When it is on property or somewhere it is not supposed to be it is vandalism.

Owlz-N-Flight said...

I'm with Isaiah. Graffiti can be art in some ways. How can that be? Well, if someone asks you to make graffiti for them you can. But if you make graffiti on a place you are not supposed to, that is called vandalism.

I think graffiti is art and vandalisem but it depends on what you write and where you write it.Like say you write a good saying and it helps what ita wrote on like a bike shop a 0r a resturaunnt. but if it's a bad thing and to hurt the place then it should be cald a crime or vandalisim.

karson81 said...

I think graffiti is art because it shows someone expressing their feelings. I also can see how it is vandalism because if you write on someone elses property it is counted as vandalism.

chanman makes an interesting point:
Don't all artists want audiences to view their work?
What if someone feels they have no other way (than graffiti) to showcase their creativity and ideas?

I think that graffiti is art because people can show off a lot of creativity.

Graffiti is vandalism, only if you write it in public without permission of the person that owns the property you wrote on. But in class we talked about the person at the skateboard shop, and that how he is asked to come in do it in peoples homes, that is art.

Bloggernaut said...

Graffiti can be both art and vandalism. As art it is written in a place with permission. As vandalism it is spray painting or painted some way or another on another persons property without permission.

winnie said...

Where do people see graffiti? I see it on a wall behind my church. THAT is vandilism. Graffiti can be on skateboards. THAT is art.

Mad Robot said...

I think graffiti is art.I know some people tag on other people's property and that is wrong. But if you have a great skill in graffiti then why can you not be able to use it?I think graffiti should be legal as long as people agree to not get overwhelmed and tag everywhere they can see.I think that people should be able to tag places that are abandoned or ask if they can tag someone's place/property.I think that graffiti is a great work of art but it should not be on places like trains, owned houses, etc.

BUBBLES!!!!!!!! said...

graffiti can be like a weed because it grows emotion on someone

donatello said...

graffiti can be a weed because if you leave a weed in the ground it will grow out and out stand all the other plants. So its kinda the same with graffiti because when you do not stop people from doing graffiti on a single wall then it will most likely grow out on that wall and out stand the rest of the graffiti on walls. So if you put them together and think about it for a while graffiti is like a weed and a weed is like graffiti.

In answering Mrs. Childress question about Graffiti, I do think that artists want to shock people because they want to get attention. They want to make people notice them sometimes they do it to hurt their feelings or they might just do it for fun.

I think graffiti is like a weed because weeds are something pesky, anoying and sometimes mean just like graffiti, like when a weed just wont go away no matter how hard you try. Graffiti is also similar to a flower because a flower may be very pretty and graffiti may sometimes be pretty as well.

Anonymous said...

I see how graffiti can be a weed like the rude stuff that tagers write, but it can also be beautiful like a flower.

Bloggernaut said...

It depends. If you have permission to do graffiti on a certain building from it's owner, it's art. Without permission, vandalism.
