Living, Breathing House?

I am so impressed by your conversation today about Frank Lloyd Wright's Robie House.  Here are some thoughts to which you might want to react:

  • The house has a spirit.
  • The house is trying to sweep away (remove) the tragedies that have occurred in the lives of its residents.
  • The house is an "unfortunate" house.
  • The fish was buried when the house was built and, in digging it up, Tommy's upset the house.  (Also, there may be other treasures buried on the grounds.)
  • The house is guarding itself against something.
  • Frank Lloyd Wright's ghost is protecting the house.

I think it is guarding itself from being taken apart and being given to mueseums.

I agree, the house does not want to be split into four parts and taken to a museum,so it protects itself.I think it is very VERY mad and irritated about people trying to split it apart.

I agree with you both completely. I think that the house is trying to blend in with natural forces like the wind. At the same time, I think it is trying to protect itself from the people who plan to cut it into fourths.

I myself don't really think that the house could be alive. Sure I believe in souls, but ghosts no. There is a BIG difference. It is probably just a coincidence. But that does not mean I am right or wrong.

I suspect that since plenty of workers have gotten hurt or had trouble on the job of tearing down the Robie house the house may have Frank Loyd Wrights ghost or it may have a spirit. If a person that was dead who built a house they thought was wonderful would not want it to be torn down unless it was completely repulsive. Tommy had been digging in the Robie house garden and had found a carved wooden fish and there could be a whole collection of things buried there that were Franks or a person who lived there. The house could be guarding something maybe buried in the garden like Tommy had found a wooden fish. The house could have many secrets....

Mrs. Goudas suggested that a Frank Lloyd Wright house cannot be separated, because each part of a FLW house is designed with other parts in mind. For example, rooms flow one into another and furniture creates enclosed spaces ("rooms") within larger areas.

I also agree that the house may be protecting itself from being split apart. But I also think that the tragedies that have occurred in the house has manifested itself into a figure and wants the outside world just to leave it alone, the tragedies may have manifested itself into an angry or deprssed figure into which it does not like to be messed with.

The house is definently trying to defend itself,
but it could be anything.

I agree with all of you. But i think that frank lloyd wright's ghost or soul is not the only one, i think that all the other people who have died in the house are mad and want to save the house.I think they are haunting the house because they dont want it murdered. I loved mrs. goudas's presentation about the house and the structure. I really liked looking at all the house designs.
